Our <\/span>meeting with Rohan<\/span> McGowan<\/span>, distiller and wearer of many hats<\/span> at The Pokeno Whisky Company<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>was <\/span>exciting<\/span> in many ways. <\/span>A<\/span> <\/span>quick Google search will yield only<\/span> scant traces of interviews and other articles written about th<\/span>e<\/span> distil<\/span>l<\/span>ery, located about <\/span>a<\/span>n<\/span> hour south of <\/span>Auckland<\/span>, New Zealand. <\/span>Furthermore<\/span>, their bottles cannot be bought in stores<\/span> – <\/span>or anywhere<\/span> – yet<\/span>!<\/span> We were eager to get an exclusive look into their mysterious business.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pokeno has been <\/span>producing and barreling their single<\/span> <\/span>malt specialty <\/span>whisky<\/span> for over a year<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span> eagerly awaiting April 2022<\/span>. <\/span>“W<\/span>e are embracing the Scottish rules<\/span>, meaning it will take 3 years and 1 day in an oak barrel until we\u2019ve actually produced <\/span>whisky<\/span>. For now,<\/span> we\u2019re just a <\/span>\u2018<\/span>spirit<\/span>\u2019<\/span> production company<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d explained Rohan.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiwi Craft Distilling<\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The history of craft spirits in New Zealand is an interesting one. <\/span>It begins, ends, and then starts again with the historic <\/span>Willowbank<\/span> Distillery<\/span>,<\/span> who was a large producer for its time in the 1970\u2019s <\/span>and<\/span> closed in 1997. S<\/span>hortly<\/span> <\/span>after th<\/span>eir closure,<\/span> <\/span>their<\/span> remaining barrels were<\/span> auctioned<\/span> and <\/span>bought<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>years later <\/span>th<\/span>e buyers<\/span> <\/span>began<\/span> bottling, which revived interest in craft spirits<\/span> in New Zealand<\/span>. <\/span>Distilleries began to resurface,<\/span> <\/span>and the industry <\/span>began to flourish<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talk to any distiller in New Zealand and you will hear bits and pieces of this story. Whisky continues to be prominent in the region thanks <\/span>to the <\/span>accessibility<\/span> of raw ingredients <\/span>close by<\/span>. <\/span>Some <\/span>distillers<\/span> are <\/span>exploring a variety of<\/span> spirits<\/span>, <\/span>and some, like Pokeno, are sticking to single-malt roots;<\/span> some <\/span>Kiwi-<\/span>centric<\/span>, some<\/span> more export<\/span>-focused.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe <\/span>i<\/span>ndustry is coming together. A new industry <\/span>a<\/span>ssociation just started up, Distilled Spirits Aotearoa, Aotearoa being the M\u0101ori name for New Zealand. <\/span>It<\/span>‘s kind of at an interesting phase where everyone’s kind of feeling out who everyone else is, and what the priorities are for the different producers,\u201d Rohan <\/span>says.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rohan<\/span>\u2019s career path is also not to be overlooked.<\/span> <\/span>O<\/span>riginally trained as a scientist<\/span>, Rohan decided his interests were better aligned with<\/span> winemak<\/span>ing<\/span>. From there<\/span>,<\/span> he <\/span>ventured<\/span> into cider <\/span>and later brewing \u2013 and finally landed in distillation. A man who has truly done it all.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a keen interest in craft production of alcoholic beverages, and it’s been a really interesting full circle transition throughout the different industrie<\/span>s,\u201d Rohan reflects.<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>It has allowed for a lot of perspective about production and the different concepts behind production. My focus has always been on producing high quality goods<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WAY <\/span>Before Bottle #1 <\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

That keen interest <\/span>led<\/span> him to <\/span>an opportunity with <\/span>Matt and <\/span>Celine Johns<\/span><\/a> at The Pokeno Whisky Company <\/span>in pursuit of grain-to-glass<\/span>,<\/span> New Zealand whisky. The<\/span>ir<\/span> grains are <\/span>sourced<\/span> from the island<\/span>,<\/span> as <\/span>are<\/span> most of their supplies. A<\/span>s in any <\/span>rising <\/span>industry<\/span> there are paths that <\/span>still <\/span>need to be blazed, like <\/span>finding cooperage<\/span>, which <\/span>has to<\/span> be imported. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/span>Our goal is to make the best<\/span> single malt spirit that really helps define <\/span>New Zealand<\/span> whisk<\/span>y. We’re really fortunate to come along in what is kind of <\/span>the <\/span>infancy <\/span>o<\/span>f<\/span> the industry and help define and direct <\/span>it<\/span> <\/span>– <\/span>which is really cool<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> Rohan <\/span>mused<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we all eagerly await the first barrel\u2019s 1,096<\/span>th<\/span> day in oak, Rohan and the team continue to produce and lay up barrels for the years to <\/span>come and<\/span> make memories along the way. He painted one suc<\/span>h story perfectly and had <\/span>us<\/span> laughing 16 <\/span>time zones away<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDuring commissioning we had a lot of fun figuring out what worked and didn’t work from an equipment perspective. W<\/span>e all crapped ourselves one of the first times we fired up the mash tun <\/span>be<\/span>cause the chute from the grain elevator wasn’t wide enough for the flow of the <\/span>grain<\/span>,<\/span> so it backed up and we just h<\/span>ear<\/span>d banging and <\/span>smashing and all thought the world was going to end. We were running out of the distillery and hitting the isolation switches on things! Commissioning was a lot of fun and we learned a lot of things <\/span>really quickly<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

All Part of the Process<\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

What advi<\/span>c<\/span>e d<\/span>oes Rohan<\/span> have to share with new distilleries? <\/span>\u201cY<\/span>ou don’t st<\/span>art <\/span>brewing or <\/span>d<\/span>istilling for other people<\/span>. Y<\/span>ou start for yourself<\/span>. <\/span>So<\/span> <\/span>I think having a good idea of how to get to <\/span>the <\/span>final <\/span>product that you <\/span>want<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>with that<\/span> having good plans<\/span> laid out<\/span> for getting it to market, is <\/span>really important<\/span>. Thankfully, <\/span>Matt and Celine<\/span> did<\/span> a great job at that<\/span>.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, a well-developed plan also meant the foresight of having system in place. Operating with a smaller team meant being streamlined and efficient, which is why they <\/span>enlisted the FIVE x 5 team early on. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my role I <\/span>wear many hats,<\/span> so to just remove <\/span>any<\/span> question mark<\/span>s<\/span> and basically not have to think about what is <\/span>located <\/span>where makes it amazing. I think that’s the beauty of it – it’s <\/span>p<\/span>eace of <\/span>m<\/span>ind that I know that the kind of back end of everything is taken care of.  I can focus on production, I can focus on warehousing, I can repair barrels. I’ve got time to do that kind of stuff. <\/span>I<\/span>t’s made everything a breeze<\/span>,\u201d Rohan told<\/span> us<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
