As a spirit&nbsp;producer, you\u2019re likely well-versed in the topics for consideration listed below&nbsp;when it comes to&nbsp;booze,&nbsp;but&nbsp;as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalkita.com\/distilling-craft-ready-or-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Shilling of Uncle Billy\u2019s Spirits says,<\/a>&nbsp;RTDs often require \u201can entirely new business plan\u201d and way of thinking&nbsp;to&nbsp;ensure&nbsp;success. Keep reading for our compilation of important considerations for&nbsp;distilleries&nbsp;of any size when expanding into RTDs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recipes&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re&nbsp;a distillery diversifying your product line&nbsp;with&nbsp;RTDs, the obvious starting point for your recipe will be your spirits&nbsp;or a high-quality&nbsp;NGS.&nbsp;As with any spirit recipe,&nbsp;all&nbsp;RTD&nbsp;recipes&nbsp;must be approved by the&nbsp;TTB.&nbsp;RTDs are recognized by the TTB as&nbsp;Distilled Spirit Specialties&nbsp;(DSSes)&nbsp;and&nbsp;there are strict regulations around what a DSS can and cannot contain.&nbsp;Perfecting the recipe is easier said than done&nbsp;and requires a different thought process than developing recipes for behind the bar. Of the many considerations, some of the most important&nbsp;to note&nbsp;are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keeping the integrity of the flavor of your spirit\u00a0and ensuring the canned version lives up to its reputation when pre-mixed and canned\/bottled\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The shelf-life of\u00a0citrus, a major consideration in\u00a0fresh-squeezed citrus vs.\u00a0pasteurized fruit juice (which often compromises flavor\u00a0but doesn\u2019t\u00a0degrade as quickly)\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring you have consistent suppliers for all necessary ingredients\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Striving to make\u00a0your recipe\u00a0stand out from the\u00a0(highly saturated)\u00a0crowd\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Packaging<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first decision&nbsp;for&nbsp;packaging&nbsp;your RTDs&nbsp;is whether you&#8217;ll&nbsp;be using bottles or cans.&nbsp;There are arguments to&nbsp;be&nbsp;made for both&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;cans are more durable and compact than glass&nbsp;and&nbsp;are&nbsp;allowed in&nbsp;a wider variety of&nbsp;drinking settings&nbsp;(such as pools), in addition to costing less to ship thanks to less weight.&nbsp;Glass is more widely available and does not necessarily require the purchase of additional equipment&nbsp;like a canning line. This decision is an important one to make early on&nbsp;and will&nbsp;likely&nbsp;dictate&nbsp;your&nbsp;production&nbsp;process&nbsp;going forward. Some additional considerations:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Canning and carbonation are technical processes\u00a0that\u00a0require\u00a0additional\u00a0capital investment\u00a0in equipment\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Current\u00a0supply chain issues\u00a0and shortages with aluminum cans\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Product storage,\u00a0as\u00a0aluminum cans can\u00a0warp or change\u00a0the\u00a0flavor of the\u00a0RTD\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supply\u00a0storage for the\u00a0additional bottles and cans required\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waste management, as\u00a0RTD producers estimate\u00a030%\u00a0of\u00a0volume\u00a0produced\u00a0is lost to\u00a0exploding cans and broken bottles\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An alternative route&nbsp;some distillers have chosen is to work with a co-packer for their&nbsp;RTDs&nbsp;to&nbsp;eliminate the trial and error&nbsp;(and therefore large amounts of waste)&nbsp;in figuring out bottling and canning themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, when it comes to packaging, branding will play a huge part in whether your RTD gets picked up off the shelves over a&nbsp;competitor.&nbsp;As influencer marketing becomes a larger avenue for&nbsp;companies&nbsp;to&nbsp;increase&nbsp;brand awareness and&nbsp;generate&nbsp;demand,&nbsp;your packaging plays&nbsp;a&nbsp;more important&nbsp;part in your success than ever before.&nbsp;Will you use sleeves or print directly on your bottle\/can? &nbsp;Will you use your distillery\u2019s branding or launch a completely new product line with a new name and branding?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distribution<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distribution&nbsp;proves&nbsp;itself the most difficult part of&nbsp;the spirits industry&nbsp;time and time again,&nbsp;with&nbsp;challenges ranging&nbsp;from&nbsp;finding&nbsp;the right&nbsp;distributor&nbsp;for your goals&nbsp;to ensuring they deliver what is promised.&nbsp;Will you begin with&nbsp;test locations with&nbsp;your existing clientele? Do you&nbsp;have a tasting room&nbsp;from which&nbsp;you can test and generate demand for your new product?&nbsp;Do you already have a solid relationship&nbsp;with a distributor&nbsp;you&nbsp;can leverage for your new SKU(s)?&nbsp;Before&nbsp;you begin producing your RTDs, cover these bases first:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How many points of distribution\u00a0are you aiming for?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you already have a relationship with a distributor?\u00a0If so,\u00a0consult them about their capabilities in distributing RTDs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is your distributor\u2019s track record? Will they deliver?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does your state allow\u00a0self-distribution?\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TTB Reporting<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably one of the most important&nbsp;factors in running a successful distillery&nbsp;is&nbsp;staying compliant. Regardless of what you\u2019re producing, you\u2019re responsible for&nbsp;accurate and timely&nbsp;TTB reports. If you\u2019re producing spirit and RTDs, spreadsheets and paperwork can get confusing and out of sorts fast.
