New Formulation Checklist

Are you working on a new formulation?  Here’s a few common ‘gotchas’ to watch out for: 

  1. Does your product really need a formula?   
     – There are several “general use” formulas for Vodka, Brandy & Whiskey 
    – Products adhering to a recognized Class & Type (e.g. Aquavit) do not require a formula submission 
    – Check the TTB Resource “Do I need a formula?”  

  2. Assuming you really need the formula, ensure you’ve got all the required information: 
     – Total batch size, and a list of all the ingredients and their amounts 
    – Any used Flavor Extracts require a “FID Sheet” (Flavor Ingredient Database) from the flavor manufacturer to be attached to the formula 
    – Any off-the-shelf ingredients – like a flavored syrup – must have a specification sheet and/or ingredient list attached to the formula 
    – You will be asked to enter the proof-at-distillation of your spirits as well as the finished product proof/ABV% 
    – The TTB may require specification sheets for finished alcohol products that you use in a formula 
  1. Describe your Method of Manufacture.  TTB is looking for a particular level of detail – not too much, and not too little. 
  1. Class & Type.  Selecting the wrong Class and/or Type for your distilled spirits formula can lead to delays and mistaken disapprovals.  TTB Specialists can and will override your chosen Class & Type, and you may not like the results.  Get it right the first time to save yourself time and hassle. 
  1. Limited Ingredients.  If you are using one of these ingredients on TTB’s list, you must prepare and submit a worksheet to demonstrate that the levels in your finished product are in spec.
